The
narrator feels she doesn’t belong to the United State; therefore, being
Supergirl helps her feel she more fit in to the American society. As a young
Puerto Rican living in the United States, she has “tight curls” hair and “flat
chest” which is completely opposite with the image about a perfect girl, who
she yearns to be. For that reason, one of her desires is to have the American
physical appearance. When she is trying to run away the ruthless reality, she
describes the change take place: “My legs would grow long, arms harden into
steel and hair would magically go straight and turn a golden color … add the
bonus of breasts”. For that reason, she fantasizes herself as Supergirl, who
has a typical American girl’s body.
